Pilates & Relaxation

A form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the first half of the 20th Century, exercises which were intended to strengthen the mind and body.

In Imelda’s Pilates class, you will find a combination of those original movements, along with stretches and periods of relaxation, in keeping with the mind/body principle as set out by Joseph Pilates. Focus is always on posture, core stability and breathing. Class is conducted in bare feet or stocking feet. Participants bring their own mat, and a blanket, if they wish, for the relaxation part of the class.

There are many health benefits to Pilates, to name a few: 

  • Improved posture
  • Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Strengthening of the core muscles, thereby providing greater support to your lower back
  • Improved flexibility through gentle stretching
  • Greater ease of movement

Imelda finishes each class with some guided relaxation, helping you to relax the body and mind, which assists in slowing the heart rate, helps lower blood pressure and reduce stress.
